A Staff photo from Aug 2019 way back at the beginning of this school year. Note this was the year COVID hit the nation on March 14, 2020. The at-school attendance was shut down and school was done virtually from computers, Chromebooks, and cell phones. This event will have an effect on the nation.

The 2020 Summer School Harvest

We have been harvesting green beans, corn, potatoes, cucumbers, and onions for the past two weeks.   The chickens produced 555 eggs last month, a school record! We had approx. 35 hens producing.

Rockstars Image added to the Chicken Trailer

During the Covid break from in-person learning at school, someone cut a hole in the back fence.  The hole allowed access for some coyotes to get onto the campus.  As a result, we lost three roosters.  We lost Godfather, Rockstar, and PIP.  Godfather was a big white and black Brahma rooster that greeted everyone or liked to chase them.  Rockstar was the orange polish rooster and PIP was the solid black rooster.  The long-term sub for Mrs. Haver, Mrs. Cazarez created a design of Rockstar.  I used the design and painted the image of Rockstar on the portable chicken trailer.

The 2019-2020 Academic School Year is officially Over

For the final time of the 2020 academic school year. A message from Mr. D Connor. Hawk Pride

We say goodbye to Mr. Mitch Gold (History), Mrs. Stephanie Kinzle (Records & Attendance), and Mr. Keith Broadway (Proctor). All three are retiring today.  We also said goodbye to Mrs. Rachel Haver (Science)  who on February 1, 2020, moved to central California and continues teaching science at a continuation high school there.

I don't think anyone who participated in the 2019-2020 academic school year will ever forget the year. On March 13, 2020 teachers and staff of the UUSD were notified that for the remainder of the school year it would all be distance learning due to the Coronavirus that was making headway into the United States from China and Europe.

Many things that usually happened during the fourth quarter was cancelled this year.  One thing that comes to my mind was soccer.  For the past five years HHS had participated in the IVL. This year the basketball season was cut short and the soccer season was cancelled all together.   There also was a series of tests that the Juniors usually took and those were cancelled as well.

Beard Update

So much has happened since March 13, 2020. COVID and BLM....

I started my beard in February. At the end of February, I contracted something that made me miss an entire week of school from March 2 through 6.  Mrs. Boswell and Mrs. Hernandez were all out that week.  The week prior Mrs. Garcia and Mrs. Cazarez were out Thursday and Friday. They were troopers trying to hang in. To date, none were tested for COVID.

HHS Senior Graduation Friday June 5

Seniors and their families were treated to graduation at Upland HS on Friday, June 5 between 8 and 10 AM.  Many HHS staff members attended the graduation as well. The graduation ceremony was held in the quad of the high school. Families in their cars were allowed to drive across campus up to the area near the principal office, where the student got out of the car walked across a stage to receive their diploma.

Work Continues on Tiny Trailer that Students Started.

I began working on the trailer this past week. I hated seeing it just sitting there. The students had framed the walls, placed the plywood on the walls, and had framed the hen boxes.

April 12 Fifteen Chicks Hatch

On this Easter day, we had 15 chicks hatch. Mrs. Cazarez had taken the incubator home and was able to observe the chickens hatching.  The chickens were brought back to HHS on April 21 and placed in one of the pens with a heat lamp. Note: 10 of the chickens went to Anothy "The Taco Man" on Monday, May 4.. Anthony is a part-time custodian for HHS and works at the district office.

New Chicks being checked out by the older chicks!

On another note, Mrs. Haver left 3 hampsters in room 1. As of April 25, we are up to 16 hamsters in the cage.

Thoughts

I have to admit I am disappointed in the student turnout on Zoom.  I have the faithful but my target was the masses. I understand this is a trying time, I get it. I just want to see students taking personal responsibility. I have set up distance learning meetings on Zoom if you cannot make the meeting time I hope that next time you will simply send me an email and say I cannot make it.

I know of a few students who have picked up extra work to help with family finances, I applaud your actions, that is very mature of you.

I would simply like students to check in with me someway. Options that I see are....Send me an email
Roger_connor@upland.k12.ca.us, respond over a Google Classroom assignment,  attend a Zoom meeting.

We have seven weeks left together in this quarter, school ends June 11, 2020. Let's make the best of it.

Project # 9 Zoom Meeting/Kahoot! Friday 4-16 @1 PM

Project #9 Zoom Meeting Friday at 1:00 PM.
If you have not used zoom you can learn about it at https://zoom.us/
This will be the class's 4th zoom meeting. Also for this meeting, I would like you to check out the site https://kahoot.it/

1. So here is how it works. I would like the student to enter the zoom meeting using either a computer, Chromebook or tablet. If you enter zoom with your phone it will be harder to participate in the Kahoot! game. You are welcomed to try to be using both Zoom and Kahoot! on your phone at the same time. But what I would prefer is that you are on the computer in Zoom and your phone with Kahoot! It's not that hard, I used my brother (the other Mr. Connor at HHS) he was able to do it.

So computer or tablet or Chromebook for Zoom
Your phone for Kahoot!
You can play both Zoom and Kahoot on a computer or Chromebook - You would have two windows open at the same time side by side.

For the Zoom meeting.....

Mr. R Connor is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Project #8. Zoom Meeting - Tuesday April 14 @ 2 PM

I have been informed that a few students are unable to access their Google Accounts. So I will post the class work here for each class. All classes will be doing Project #8

Project #8

Some of you may have seen my earlier announcement stream where I talked about Google Meet. I have been informed we are not ready to use Google Meet just yet as a district and I have been directed by our principal to stay with Zoom. With that news I am asking then that we continue with Zoom. If you have not already done so I will need for you to sign up for and/or download the app Zoom for your phone, tablet or computer. My bother, Mr. D Connor figured it out and he is a non tech guy. Here is the link to Zoom. Zoom.....

Once you have signed in or downloaded the app please plan on attending my Zoom get together tomorrow Tuesday April 14 @ 2 PM. To enter the meeting all you will need to do is click on the link below, or the link in Project #8.

The purpose of the meeting is to check in with one another and talk about the new quarter that just started today. 4th Quarter goes from April 13 to June 11th.

Zoom meeting will be Project #8. This Zoom meeting will count towards your grade, so please make an attempt. In our last Zoom meeting most said they would rather do the Zoom than an assignment. Hope to see you all there. Here is the meeting code to get into the meeting.

Easter/Spring Holiday

I hope everyone has been enjoying Spring Break.  Class will be back in session Monday April 13, 2020.  Hope to see you all then!

We caught an image of a predator who wanted into the chicken coop two nights ago. Not a great shot. I will be repositioning the camera angle in the nights to come.

Assignment #5 Houseparty App Review

All Classes!

Students, please start on your Google Classroom page.  Assignment number 5.  You are provided with a link to an App that can run either on your computer or your phone.  I would like for you to download the app and work with a friend or family member to experiment with the application.
I have provided you with a review sheet that you will turn in to google classroom with your review of the app.  Even if you can't get the app to work I want you to submit a comment to receive credit for the assignment. Link for Houseparty App

Update Sunday 3/29 on the  Houseparty App

So I wanted to let you all know that. I tried the app with friends on Friday night 3/27.  There is a game feature on the app that I hope you all would try. We found that part fun, but the social media screen time portion was not holding up well. Lot's of freezing and pixilation.  So as a group we switched over to Zoom. Zoom does not have a built in-game feature but it was a much more stable platform.

The new HHS Staff Meetings.....
